Yaşar University International Law Implementation and Research Center organized a conference on “Brexit: European Union Law and EU-Turkey Relations” with the participation of Prof. Dr. Pınar Karacan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sinem Ünaldılar Kocamaz.

Prof. Dr. Pınar Karacan started her speech by questioning why the Brexit deal was deemed important. Drawing attention to the important legal steps taken during the transition process, Prof. Dr. Karacan also evaluated how the process and negotiations began on the EU side.

On the other hand, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sinem Ünaldılar Kocamaz elaborated the deal through different dimensions including international relations, EU-Turkey relations and diplomacy. Noting that the deal was not a success story as was presented to the British public, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kocamaz also said that Britain no longer has the support of a strong regional organization such as the European Commission. Yet, bilateral cooperation is expected to prevail with the approval of the European Union. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kocamaz also mentioned about Britain’s support to Turkey on its EU membership process and defined the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Britain and Turkey as of vital importance to Turkey.
